2020 – AC – Science Workshops delivered by National Expert: Professor Denis Goodrum

This is a series of three workshops designed for school leaders and teachers of Science from Prep – Year 10 to be held in Term 2, Term 3 and Term 4. Workshops will take place in the South, North and North-West. The workshops will be delivered by Professor Denis Goodrum, writer of the Australian Curriculum: Science Framing paper as well as guiding the development of the national science curriculum. He was also the Executive Director of the Science by Doing project with the Australian Academy of Science.

While maximum value will be realised by attending all three workshops it is possible for participants to attend individual workshops. The purpose of the workshops is to enhance understanding of the Australian science curriculum for school leaders and teachers with the realistic expectation that the science learning of their students will be improved.

Term 2: Enhancing teaching strategies that underlie the Australian Curriculum: Science;  Enhancing inquiry-based teaching; effective questioning, student learning

Term 3: Understanding the Australian Curriculum: Science; Science Understanding strand; science inquiry skills; science as a human endeavour; interrelationship between the three strands

Term 4: Leading Change using the Australian Curriculum: Science with quality assessment; understanding designing and implementing quality curriculum units; designing and implementing quality assessments; leading effective educational change

As a result of participating in the workshops, school leaders and teachers of science will develop:

  • an understanding of teaching strategies that underlie the Australian Curriculum: Science
  • an understanding of how to design and implement quality curriculum units and assessments
  • an awareness of how to access resources to support effective planning and implementing the Australian Curriculum: Science
  • leadership understandings, skills and competencies enabling them to implement changes that will lead to enhanced learning outcomes for students in science.
