Program Description

The revised Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (Version 9.0) includes the Process of Computational thinking. This is new content for our students and teachers. This workshop will explore the development of this way of working and thinking as it builds from its introduction within the Digital Technologies curriculum from Prep to Year 2 through to Year 6 in Mathematics.

Computational thinking is characterised through the application of its various components of decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, using models and simulations, algorithms and generalisation. In this workshop, Associate Professor Helen Chick (UTas) will explore these components using a variety of unplugged activities suited to the primary classroom.

Program Outcomes

As a result of engaging in this workshop, participants will:

  • build a deeper understanding of what characterises computational thinking and its various components
  • gain confidence in teaching and assessing this mathematical process in their classroom
  • be introduced to a range of appropriate resources that can support students develop their computational thinking
