Differentiating Place Value Years 1 – 3 Mathematics

This is a 90 minute online presentation. Place value is a significant big idea in Mathematics, its development does take considerable time. The focus of this workshop is on developing place value understanding of the base 10 number system by elaborating on the research developed by Professor Di Siemon (RMIT). Participants will see and how activities and games can build confidence and facility in this big idea in Years 1 – 3. Plus consider tasks that progress student understanding.

As a result of this workshop, participants will:
a) Increase their curricula knowledge of place value and the incorporation the Mathematical Proficiencies of problem-solving and reasoning in the classroom;
b) Improve their pedagogical content knowledge in relation to place value and how activities can consolidate understanding; and
c) Be introduced to quality resources to support their planning in Mathematics.
