Program Description

Teaching young children in English in multilingual contexts is a course for all teachers working with EAL and mainstream students between 5 and 11 years of age.

Young children at school embark on their developmental pathway of learning by using language in teaching contexts through reading and writing. This makes them initially more reliant on spoken language and many other meaning-making resources, such as visuals (both static and animated) and sound (music and sound effects).

This teacher development course brings a functional grammar perspective to planning and learning. The course materials present strategies and issues addressing the fundamental relationship between language and learning.

The course entails 18 hours face-to-face learning in 7 modules which, when combined with between module readings and activities completed before each module, is equivalent to more than 40 hours professional development for teachers. This course is also suited to teachers of students with limited English language.

Program Outcomes
  • The development of teachers’ understanding of meaning-making and how we can use that to build the capacity of both EAL and mainstream students in multilingual classroom.
  • The development of teachers’ understanding of explicit teaching practices that will build up students’ repertoires of meaning-making resources.
  • Will assist teachers to reflect critically on their teaching and develop shared understandings about scaffolding.
