Program Description

Successful learners of Mathematics have solid foundations in fundamental Number concepts. The building of these foundations is critical to ensure success in Mathematics. This session will focus on two Big ideas in Number: Trusting the Count and Place Value.
The workshop will focus on the critical importance of building mental objects for the numbers to ten through subitising and the known difficulties involved in teaching and learning place value in the early years.

The session will be presented by Emeritus Professor Dianne Siemon (RMIT). Dianne Siemon is an acknowledged expert in the development of children’s understanding of number. This session will present teachers and leaders with evidence-based and research informed practice that build teacher capacity and understanding in these ‘Big Ideas’.

Program Outcomes

Through engaging in this workshop, participants will:

  • understand what is involved in Trusting the Count and Place Value, their basis in research and how these big ideas relate to the curriculum
  • become proficient in using assessment tools developed through research, to inform future teaching
  • build curricula knowledge in Mathematics and understand the progression of learning in relation to this aspect of Number
  • increase their pedagogical content knowledge using research-informed and evidence-based practices.
