Program Description:

This workshop is designed for teachers and support staff who work with students in Years 3 through 8. The focus of the workshop will be on the FIRST LEGO League Challenge, and in particular, on the Innovation Project. However, the workshop will also explore robot design.  Participants will learn how to implement the program with whole classes or groups of students and gain strategies for supporting student-led innovations.

The FIRST LEGO League Challenge provides students with valuable learning experiences, including:

  • A better understanding of how STEM is used in the real world
  • The opportunity to apply concepts from Science, Technologies and Mathematics
  • Experience with coding and programming
  • Hands-on, real-world problem solving.
Program Outcomes

By engaging in this professional learning, participants will:

  • Understand how the program can be implemented to engage whole classes or groups of students, encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, and critical and creative thinking and enabling students to develop necessary skills.
  • Know ways to integrate the Innovation Project within the Australian Curriculum V9, Learning Areas of Science, Technologies, and Mathematics.
  • Learn various strategies for supporting student-led innovation and creativity, including brainstorming techniques, design thinking, and prototyping
